I was ten, and I had just figured things out: I wanted to be a teacher! And so I told her, and she said, "Jessica! You're too smart to be a teacher!" And it crushed me. I told my mom, and she tried to explain in a way that would break neither my dreams nor my relationship with this woman. That what she had meant was, "You can do anything," but that it had come out all wrong. It would not be the last time that people found my career choice disappointing, but it was the last time I listened to them.Mrs. Silversteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15081113623522933830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4923387789611443880.post-46549615698500075362012-04-24T19:18:00.464-07:002012-04-24T19:18:00.464-07:00On a board for writers I frequent, occasionally hi...On a board for writers I frequent, occasionally high school students will post, asking what they should major in if they want to write. My advice is always to major in what interests them and take any classes that sound intriguing. Get a broad background. Use college to explore, form friendships, and really learn to think things through. Those are skills that will stand them in better stead than any particular degree.

ErinErin M. You don't have to know "what you're going to be when you grow up" at graduation anymore. Not that I want to give unsolicited advice, but no one ever told me anything helpful when I was graduating, and that's the one thing I do wish someone had said to me.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4923387789611443880.post-91068868688003119272012-04-24T03:11:52.645-07:002012-04-24T03:11:52.645-07:00Google 'yodeling CD's'. One can imagine in 'The Graduate', the man coming up to Benjy (a young Dustin Hoffman) at the party and saying not "plastics", but "yodeling".
